H1N1 Influenza

Update: 11.5.09

Help us protect our patients and staff from the flu:
The H1N1 virus is expected to spread this fall, affecting up to 30 percent of our population. People younger than 25 are at least 4 times as likely to get this flu, and anyone who does get it, is contagious for up to 24 hours before showing any symptoms.

Pregnant women, children and people with underlying health conditions are very vulnerable to the H1N1 virus. Silverton Hospital Network is committed to protecting our vulnerable patients from H1N1 flu and we need your help.

Patients who are coming in Silverton Hospital with respiratory or flu-like symptoms are asked to wear a mask. Masks are available at the reception desks.

Visitors to Silverton Hospital - If you are ill, we ask that you stay at home and take care of yourself. Please do not visit Silverton Hospital patients if you have any flu symptoms.

Children are at increased risk for infection and are strongly discouraged from visiting the hospital.

Patients who are hospitalized with the flu will be asked to select no more than two adult visitors (per hospital stay) who will provide them with the necessary emotional support and care they need. Only those identified adults will be allowed in the patient’s room. A band will be placed on identified visitors’ wrists. The band must be worn at all times during the patient’s hospital stay. Identified visitors will be given guidelines to help prevent the spread of the flu.

Preventive Action

  • People with underlying health conditions including all children (asthma, diabetes, obesity, lung or heart disease, neurological disease, children on long term aspirin therapy, etc.)

Get a Flu Shot
The single best way to prevent the flu is to get both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines. Marion County has received its first shipment of Flumist and future shipments of vaccine are expected.

Health officials report that it is expected that there will be enough H1N1 vaccine for everyone who wants it, but people in priority groups will receive it first.

Contact your healthcare provider or County Health Department to arrange for your vaccination.

Resources
There are several reliable resources for H1N1 information. Information is published in several languages.
